February 17, 2016

A Word From Don

  • Please join the Schools of Conscience monthly meetup for the Portland premiere of the documentary film Beyond Measure on Saturday, March 12th at 2PM co-sponsored by the Village Free School.

  • I recently created several new videos, one series and one short introduction to Schools of Conscience.

  • Reed College Junior Kayla Good and I will be prsenting a poster on the "Nurturing is the Foundation" Policy Framework at the 6th International Self Determination Theory Conference in Victoria, BC, in early June.
We are preparing a fully annotated version of the framework and anticipate submitting a paper based on that annotated version for peer-reviewed publication as we prepare for the conference.

Enjoy,

Two New Videos

Schools of Conscience Monthly Meetup Film Screening in Collaboration with the Village Free School

The Village Free School team has gracioualy asked me to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the screeing of Beyond Measure.

Beyond Measure is the follow up film from the creators of the award winning documentary Race to Nowhere.

While Race to Nowhere focused on the problems with the culture of high stakes and standardized testing, homework, and the crazy college admissions race, Beyond Measure focuses on how some schools are finding ways to provide equitable, empowering, student-centered educational opportunities as part of a healthy educational lifestyle.

I gladly accepted the invitation from VFS and have been working hard to get the word out about the movie to most of the schools in Washington, Clackamas, and Multnomah counties.

We are seeking schools and other children and youth oriented organizations who would like to have information tables at the event.

If you know anyone at such an organization and can introduce me or pass on some information please let me know.

If you would like to volunteer to attend to my information table during the event, which will get you in for free, please conact me right away.

When: 2PM on Saturday, March 12th, 2016

Where: Revolution Hall, 1300 SE Stark St., Portland, OR

Two New Videos

As I mentioned in my "Word From Don" above I made several new videos since the last newsletter.

First, I made an even quicker overview (>4 minutes) of Schools of Conscience than the one I put on the join page last month.

Second, I completely redid my page about the franken-school monster called Reading First.

Reading First was one of the flagship programs of the original No Child Left a Behind Act.

The Bush Administration spent over a billion a year for six years and had nothing to show for it.

The video explains why that happened and how we can prevent it moving forward.

Thanks!
