Longview is located in the village of Brewster in scenic Putnam County, New York. Longview School teachers have initiated a project to help educate the public about issues related to schools and parenting. School director, Mark Jacobs, and two of the school’s teachers, Trevor Remen and Carolin Trott, are hosting a public access television show called EduTalk. The program is a collaborative effort of staff, students, parents and friends of the Longview community. The show’s cameraperson is Sunny, a senior at Longview who is interested in film and camerawork. The editor, video and sound person is Eric Vitner, parent of Rowan, another Longview student. The studio technical director is Longview friend, Kevin Stamey. This show will air on Thursday, February 25 on the Peekskill regional public access television station, but is also be available online through the EduTalk YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsjlXvRKaOhsO0gSJhGbqsg and the EduTalk Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/EduTalkTV/. On the program, the hosts critically analyze thought-provoking aspects of education and parenting. The format is a panel discussion which at times will include outside experts. The first topic is the controversial Common Core. The hosts debunk myths about the Common Core and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses. The ending segment of the show, called “In the Spotlight,” profiles a specific program, school, or approach to education in each episode. The premiere segment focuses on North Star Self-Directed Learning for Teens (www.northstarteens.org), a program which encourages students to drop out of high school and to drop into their lives by enrolling in this teen education center. The hosts of EduTalk visited the program and air footage from their visit, in addition to discussing the pros and cons of the program. Mark Jacobs, co-host and EduTalk producer said: “In an age when we have more choices and freedoms than at any other time in history, it is disappointing how few educational options seem to be available to parents.
