Benjamin Zander is a Good Teacher

by Don Berg
(Port Townsend, WA, USA)

Here is a pair of videos of one truly great teacher. In the first he teaches appreciation of classical music, then in the second he transforms the cello performance of a fifteen year old high school student.

What he does is not merely the transfer of some knowledge and information, he is engaging in the transformation of relationships. He clearly involves us in his own relationship to music and gives us the opportunity to transform our relationship to it in the process.

Here is another example of good teaching and a good teacher of music in terms of relationships rather than knowledge and information.
